The Straight Answer
Thermostat replacement is genuinely simple on a basic single-stage system. On heat pumps, multi-stage and variable-speed equipment the wiring is different and the programming has to match how the system stages, and getting either wrong makes sound equipment behave badly.
The failure modes are specific and they all impersonate equipment faults. Wrong wiring or configuration produces short cycling, incorrect staging, or loss of a mode entirely. On a heat pump, a mis-wired reversing valve signal gives you a system that cools confidently when you asked for heat.
People then call about a broken heat pump, and the fault is the control on the wall. The thermostat is the command centre, so it is worth ruling out before anyone quotes you for a compressor.
Often Mistaken For Equipment Failure
Each of these gets reported as a system fault. Each of them can also be a control fault, which is cheaper, so it is worth checking first.
An inaccurate or badly located sensor misreports the building to the system. Everything tests correctly and the house still feels wrong.
Frequent on and off operation, or cycles running far longer than expected. Both are classic calibration or staging symptoms rather than mechanical ones.
Temperature control alone cannot manage moisture, and in this climate moisture is half of comfort. A control that ignores humidity produces a cold clammy room.
A display that does not respond properly, or no practical scheduling at all. This is the point where replacement genuinely beats reconfiguration.
Before You Buy Anything
Most comfort complaints belong to one of three layers, and a new thermostat only fixes one of them. This is how to tell which one you have.

Checked against your actual equipment before anything is ordered or removed, because discovering an incompatibility with the old control already off the wall is a bad afternoon.

Common Questions
On a basic single-stage system, often yes, and we will say so rather than talk you out of it.
On a heat pump, multi-stage or variable-speed system the wiring and programming are genuinely different, and errors cause short cycling, incorrect staging or the loss of heating or cooling. The frustrating part is that these present as equipment faults, so the real cause can take weeks and a diagnostic visit to find.
The common wire supplies continuous power to the thermostat, which a Wi-Fi model needs in order to stay connected rather than drawing power intermittently from the system.
Many older installations never had one run to the thermostat location. Finding it, or running it, is part of the install, and it is the single most common reason a smart thermostat works for a fortnight and then keeps dropping offline.
Almost certainly the reversing valve signal is wired or configured backwards.
A heat pump produces heat by reversing its refrigerant cycle, and the thermostat tells it which direction to run. Get that signal wrong and the system does the opposite of what you asked, with complete confidence. It is a configuration fix, not an equipment failure, and it is worth checking before anyone opens up the outdoor unit.
It can, mostly by removing unnecessary runtime rather than by cooling more efficiently. The saving comes from scheduling around occupancy, work hours, overnight and holidays, and across a cooling season this long, small reductions accumulate.
What it will not do is rescue a system with a duct problem or a refrigerant charge problem. Those cost more than the schedule saves, and a smart thermostat will simply document them for you.
It can monitor humidity, manage cooling cycles with it in mind, and coordinate with a whole-home dehumidifier where one exists. It cannot remove moisture by itself.
Where humidity stays high despite good temperature control, the answer is dedicated dehumidification with the control configured to work alongside it. Buying a better thermostat to fix a moisture problem is a common and expensive misdiagnosis.
A single thermostat measures one spot and treats it as the whole building. If rooms genuinely need different temperatures at the same time, a smarter control in one location will not fix that and zoning will.
If the rooms should already be even and are not, the likeliest cause is ductwork rather than either. Establishing which of the three you have is worth doing before spending on any of them.
