Cleaning a coil removes what has grown on it. A UV-C lamp aimed at that coil slows how fast it comes back. In a climate where the coil stays damp for months, the second part is what stops the first from becoming an annual expense.
The Straight Answer
The honest reason to consider UV is not that coil cleaning fails. It is that in Florida the conditions which caused the fouling never go away, so a freshly cleaned surface starts being recolonised almost immediately.
This is the narrowest of the air quality products we fit. It is a lamp, in a cabinet, pointed at one surface. UV-C treats only what it reaches, which is why aim and placement decide whether it does anything at all. Air moving through the ducts is a different problem, handled by in-duct treatment, and particles are a filtration problem.
Green UV and BLU QR do the same job. BLU QR adds quick-release lamps and more flexible mounting, which sounds like a detail and is not: a lamp that is awkward to change is a lamp that does not get changed.
What It Is For
Every one of these begins at the coil or the pan beneath it. If your complaint is about the air in your rooms rather than what is happening inside the air handler, this is the wrong product.
A smell that starts inside the cabinet and arrives at the vents with the air, rather than coming from anything in the room.
The pattern that actually justifies a lamp. If the coil is dirty again within a season, the environment is the problem, not the cleaning.
Buildup insulating the coil so heat transfer drops. The system runs longer for the same cooling, and nothing appears mechanically wrong.
Standing water in a dark enclosed space, which is arguably a better home for growth than the coil. Worth illuminating where the layout permits.
Sequence Matters
These get presented as competing purchases. They are not. They do different things at different points in time, and the order you do them in changes what you get for the money.

The Total Comfort Way
UV is widely sold and inconsistently fitted. These five steps are the difference between a lamp that works and one that merely glows.
Equipment compatibility confirmed before fitting rather than after, and airflow and static pressure checked so that nothing added disturbs what the system depends on.
The lamp is positioned to fall directly on the evaporator surface. UV-C treats only what it reaches, so aim is not a finishing touch, it is the whole mechanism.
Placed to maximise fin exposure using the cabinet's own reflectivity, then mounted magnetically or on a plate depending on the equipment.
Ballast configured and 24V integration verified. The lamp sits enclosed within the air handler, which is what keeps the light contained during normal operation.
Pan illuminated where the layout allows, system commissioned and documented, and the lamp labelled with its date so replacement is scheduled rather than remembered.
Common Questions
Because the conditions that caused it have not changed. The coil produces condensate through most of the year here, so within days of cleaning it is damp, dark and receiving organic dust again.
Cleaning resets the surface. It does not alter the environment. Continuous UV is what slows the rate of return, which is the argument for pairing the two rather than choosing between them.
Yes, and this is the part to understand before buying rather than after. UV-C output declines gradually while the lamp still looks perfectly lit, so a two-year-old lamp can be producing very little useful output while appearing to work.
That is protection you are paying for and no longer receiving. We check lamp age at maintenance visits and label the lamp at installation, rather than leaving you to track it.
They do the same job. BLU QR adds quick-release lamp technology for tool-free replacement, and more flexible mounting for tight installations.
On an accessible air handler, either is fine and the cheaper one is the sensible buy. Where access means tools and contortion, the quick-release version is worth the difference, because it decides whether the annual replacement actually happens.
Indirectly, and less dramatically than it is sometimes sold. Biofilm insulates the coil and reduces heat transfer, so preventing that buildup preserves efficiency you would otherwise lose gradually.
It will not make a clean system more efficient than it already is. The gain is in what you avoid losing, which is real but is not the same claim.
Where the layout allows, yes, and it is worth doing. The pan holds standing water in a dark enclosed space, which is a better environment for growth than the coil itself.

When fitted correctly, yes. The lamp sits enclosed within the air handler, so the light is contained inside the equipment and there is no exposure during normal operation.
Proper enclosure and safe 24V integration are part of the installation, and are among the reasons this is not suitable as a DIY fitting.
