A filter that nearly fits does not nearly work. Air takes the gap, because a gap offers far less resistance than filter media does, so a close-enough retail size can leave your filtration doing a fraction of what the label promises.
The Straight Answer
A filter only works on the air that passes through it. Leave a gap at the edge and air goes around rather than through, because the gap is the easier route. A filter with small gaps is not a slightly worse filter. It is substantially bypassed.
The cost is not only dust in your rooms. What bypasses the filter lands on the evaporator coil, the blower motor, the duct interiors and inside the air handler, accumulating until it restricts airflow. The filter you fitted to protect the equipment fails at exactly that job when it does not seal.
Custom filters remove the gaps by matching the rack or grille exactly instead of approximately. That is the entire product, and it is a smaller idea than it sounds until you see what bypass does over a few years.
When You Need Them
Custom filters are for systems retail sizes were never going to fit. If a stock size seats properly in your rack, you do not need this page.
Openings no retail product matches. Common in older properties and in anything renovated, because the opening changed and the filter range did not.

The Total Comfort Way
Five steps, and none of them involve guessing from a photograph of the old filter.
The rack or grille opening measured directly, not read off the printed size of whatever filter happens to be in there, which is often the wrong one already.
Blower capacity and duct airflow resistance assessed, because they set the ceiling on how dense a filter this system can tolerate.

Denser media means more resistance. Too much raises static pressure and reduces the airflow the system depends on, and a starved system costs you in cooling performance and equipment wear. We look at blower capacity, duct resistance and current static pressure before recommending a rating. Fit is the bigger win; pushing the rating too far can undo it entirely.
