The Straight Answer

Air Takes The Gap

A filter only works on the air that passes through it. Leave a gap at the edge and air goes around rather than through, because the gap is the easier route. A filter with small gaps is not a slightly worse filter. It is substantially bypassed.

The cost is not only dust in your rooms. What bypasses the filter lands on the evaporator coil, the blower motor, the duct interiors and inside the air handler, accumulating until it restricts airflow. The filter you fitted to protect the equipment fails at exactly that job when it does not seal.

Where Standard Sizes Fail

Custom filters are for systems retail sizes were never going to fit. If a stock size seats properly in your rack, you do not need this page.

Odd Return Grilles

Openings no retail product matches. Common in older properties and in anything renovated, because the opening changed and the filter range did not.

Worth knowing: you can check this yourself in two minutes and it costs nothing. Slide the filter out and look at the rack. If you can see daylight around the edges when it is seated, if it rattles, or if someone has packed the gap with card or foam, you have bypass. If it seats cleanly on all four sides, your filtration is doing its job and you do not need us for this.

Worth knowing: do not automatically ask for the highest MERV available. Denser media means more resistance, and past a point that raises static pressure and starves the system of the airflow it needs, which costs you more than the extra filtration gains.
