Filtration and purification treat the air you already have. An ERV replaces it, bringing outdoor air in and stale indoor air out, with a core that transfers heat and moisture between the two streams so ventilating does not hand your cooling system a humidity problem.
The Straight Answer
Modern Florida construction is deliberately airtight. That keeps cooling in and cuts the power bill, and the same move traps indoor pollutants, odours and moisture with no route out and nothing fresh coming in to dilute them.
An ERV addresses that without giving up the benefit. It exchanges indoor air for outdoor air continuously, and the recovery core passes heat and moisture between the outgoing and incoming streams, so incoming air arrives preconditioned rather than raw.
In a Florida summer that distinction is the whole product. Unconditioned outdoor air is hot and close to saturated, and putting it straight into a cooled building is how ventilating turns into a humidity problem.
What You Notice
These get reported as air conditioning faults, and chasing them as cooling problems leads nowhere, because the equipment is working. The air is clean and simply exhausted.
Most obvious walking back in after being out for a few hours. You stop noticing it while you are in it, which is part of the problem.
Cooking and household smells that fade slowly rather than clearing, because nothing is carrying them out of the building.
Irritants being recirculated rather than diluted. The pattern points at the air itself rather than at the season.
The system moves air around the building constantly. Moving it is not the same as replacing it, and no amount of running will exchange anything.
Why Balance Matters
All three move air. Only one of them replaces it at a controlled rate without changing the pressure inside the building, and pressure is where the trouble starts.

That is the right question to ask in Florida, and it is the concern an ERV exists to answer. The recovery core transfers moisture between the outgoing and incoming streams, so incoming air is preconditioned before it reaches the building.
Fresh air without an ERV does import humidity. Open windows and exhaust fans pulling air through gaps both do exactly that. The core is the difference between ventilating and importing weather.
Because they only push air out. Removing air without replacing it leaves the building at negative pressure, so it draws replacement air in through whatever gaps it can find. Wall cavities, attic penetrations, around window frames.
That air is unfiltered, uncontrolled, and in this climate humid. You end up ventilating and importing moisture in the same breath, which is worse than doing nothing.

The recovery core keeps the increase modest rather than severe by preconditioning incoming air with the air on its way out. Against achieving the same ventilation by opening windows or running exhaust fans, an ERV is considerably the cheaper route. Against not ventilating at all, it costs more.
Both recover heat. An ERV also transfers moisture.
In cold dry climates an HRV often suffices, because humidity is a lesser concern. Here, moisture transfer is the point. What incoming air carries matters at least as much as its temperature, which is why we fit ERVs in this climate and not HRVs.
They solve different problems. Filtration removes particles from the air you have. Purification treats contaminants in it. Ventilation replaces the air itself.
If the complaint is dust or allergens, the first two address it and cost less. If it is staleness, lingering odours, or the sense that the air never changes, no amount of filtering helps, because the air is clean and exhausted at the same time.
