A mini-split is an indoor air handler connected to an outdoor condenser by a small refrigerant line set, with no ducts at all. Because nothing has to be routed through the building, the install is fast and barely invasive. One outdoor unit can serve one head or several.

The part that matters here is the inverter compressor. Rather than switching fully on and off, it modulates output continuously to match demand, which produces long gentle run cycles. Run time is what removes moisture.

A conventional system that satisfies the thermostat quickly and shuts off cools the air and leaves the water behind. That is the classic Florida complaint of a cold, clammy room. A modulating system does not do that, which is why ductless suits this climate better than its reputation suggests.

Worth knowing: ductless is the easiest HVAC install to do badly, because every shortcut is invisible until the system fails a year later. Ask any quote, ours included, for four things: a load calculation rather than a square-footage guess, vacuum evacuation with a micron reading, sealed wall penetrations, and a dedicated electrical disconnect. And if anyone offers to upsize the unit to be safe, decline. Oversizing stops the compressor modulating, which throws away the humidity advantage you are buying it for.

STEP 03

Vacuum And Pressure Test

Vacuum evacuation and refrigerant pressure testing before startup. Moisture or air left in the lines is the most common cause of premature mini-split failure, and skipping it saves an installer an hour.

STEP 04

Dedicated Electrical

A dedicated disconnect installed and the circuit verified. These systems need proper electrical work, not an extension of whatever happened to be nearby.

Drainage, Startup, Calibration

No, and oversizing hurts more on a mini-split than on central air.

The efficiency and humidity advantage comes from the compressor modulating across a range. An oversized unit sits at the bottom of that range or cycles instead, so you lose the dehumidification you paid extra for. This is why we calculate the load rather than estimating from square footage, and why we will push back if you ask for a larger unit than the room needs.

Well suited to it, and for a specific reason. The inverter compressor modulates continuously rather than cycling on and off, producing longer gentler run cycles, and run time is what removes moisture.

A system that blasts cold air then shuts off cools without dehumidifying, which is the complaint people describe as cold and clammy. Modulation is the fix for that.

Almost always the condensate drain. Ductless heads produce water continuously in this humidity and the drain line is narrow, so algae and debris block it easily. The water then backs up and finds the wall.
