In Florida the reason to want backup power is the air conditioning, and the air conditioner is also what decides how big the generator has to be. Get that decision right and the whole project changes shape.
The Straight Answer
Lights, a refrigerator and a few outlets are a small electrical load. A central air conditioner is not, and its starting surge is larger still. In a Florida outage the cooling is the whole point, which means the AC drives the generator size and therefore most of the cost.
That is why this belongs on an HVAC company's site rather than being purely an electrical question. Whether your system is single-stage or inverter-driven, whether a soft starter can reduce the surge, and whether one ductless head could cover the occupied part of the house are all decisions that change the generator you need.
Get those right and the project can be substantially smaller. Skip them and you buy capacity for a house you are not going to be living in at full tilt during a hurricane anyway.
What Prompts The Call
Worth ranking these honestly before sizing anything, because the first one is a safety matter and the others are inconvenience or expense.
Heat and humidity make a sealed Florida house genuinely unsafe within hours, and it is worse for the very young, the elderly and anyone unwell.
Oxygen concentrators, CPAP and refrigerated medication. Where this applies, backup power stops being a comfort purchase and the sizing conversation changes.
No power means no water on a well, and no sump means water where you do not want it. Both are motor loads that need accounting for.
A full freezer, a home office that has to function, and alarm and camera systems that go blind. Real costs, but the ones to weigh last.

The middle option is the one most people should look at first and the one least often presented.

The Total Comfort Way
The first two steps decide the size and therefore the price. Everything after that is execution.
What genuinely has to run, in what order, and for how long. This conversation moves the cost more than any product choice, and it happens before anyone looks at a catalogue.
Running loads measured and the air conditioner's starting surge accounted for specifically, since that peak rather than the steady draw is what sets the generator size.
Gas meter capacity or propane tank and regulator sizing checked against the generator's demand under load, rather than assumed from the connection being present.
Transfer switch specified and installed, panel work carried out under the appropriate electrical licence, and the unit sited with clearance and storm exposure in mind.
Tested transferring an actual load rather than merely starting, then the self-test schedule configured and explained so the thing is still working next hurricane season.
Common Questions
It can, and that is the single biggest factor in what the system costs. A central air conditioner draws a large running load and a much larger starting surge, and the generator has to cover the surge.
There are cheaper routes to a cool house during an outage. A soft starter reduces the surge. A single ductless head cooling the rooms you are actually using needs a fraction of the capacity. We would rather work through those than sell you the largest unit in the range.
Essential circuits suits most households better than they expect, and it is the option least often put in front of them.
Whole-home backup earns its cost where there is a medical requirement, a well and sump to keep running, or a property that cannot simply be left. Otherwise, powering the parts of the house you will genuinely occupy during a storm is both cheaper to buy and cheaper to fuel.
Natural gas where the supply exists, because it does not need refilling and does not run out mid-outage. Propane where it does not, with the tank sized for the days you want to cover.
In both cases the question is delivery capacity rather than availability. A meter or regulator that cannot supply the flow the generator wants under full load will cause it to stumble, and that only reveals itself when the power is actually off.
Annually as a minimum, plus the automatic weekly or monthly self-test that the unit runs itself.
This is the part people neglect and it is the reason generators fail to start. An engine that has sat unused for two years is not reliable backup, it is decoration. If nobody is going to look after it, that is worth factoring into the decision before buying rather than after.
On natural gas, effectively as long as the supply holds, with pauses for oil and service intervals on a long outage. On propane, until the tank runs down, which is arithmetic you should do before you need it.
Work out your realistic worst case in days, not hours, and size the fuel accordingly. A generator that covers eighteen hours of a four-day outage has solved the easy part of the problem.
Not with a standby unit. It detects the outage and transfers automatically within seconds, which is much of the point for a property you might be away from during a storm.
A portable with an inlet connection is different: someone has to be there to set it up and start it. That is a real limitation for anyone who evacuates, and it is worth being clear-eyed about before choosing the cheaper option.
