AC repair is the diagnosis and correction of a specific fault in a cooling system, whether electrical, refrigerant, airflow or drainage, so the system returns to stable operation without replacing the equipment. It is the right answer whenever the failure is confined to components rather than the compressor or coil.
In Florida that distinction matters more than it does elsewhere. Systems here run eight to ten months a year, so a small fault left running becomes a large one quickly. Ice on the refrigerant lines and a breaker that keeps tripping are the two clearest examples: both mean the system is straining against an underlying problem, and continuing to run it is how a component repair turns into a compressor replacement.
A proper repair finds the cause rather than the symptom. Refrigerant is never consumed in normal operation, so a system that is low always has a leak. Recharging without locating and sealing it sells you the same repair again next year.
Before It Becomes A Replacement
Most failures announce themselves first. Catching them early usually means a smaller repair.
Frost on the refrigerant lines or the indoor coil means the system is straining against a restriction or a low charge. Running it this way is how a component repair becomes a compressor replacement.

A cooling failure in a Florida summer is treated as urgent rather than routine, particularly where older adults, young children or anyone with respiratory conditions are in the house. Response time is not identical everywhere though, and we would rather give you a realistic window than an optimistic one.

Two practical consequences. Regular coil rinsing matters more on the coast, and coated coils are worth specifying at replacement rather than afterwards. But heavy visible corrosion does not automatically mean replacement either, because the compressor and charge may be perfectly sound. Ask for condition to be assessed rather than judged on appearance.
